Saving Grace

from Heretic by DeFord

about

It’s not an omen, it’s a promise

- I don’t know, I feel like I’ve lived my whole life being told this is the way, this is the truth, this is the life, and I followed that to a tee and all it ever made me feel is guilty. Don’t you think doing the right thing should feel better than that?
- I mean, vegetables don’t feel great to chew on.
- I guess, but like, then I met you and felt like I finally understood what salvation felt like, and they would’ve shunned me if they knew we were together. Like if I listened to them all the time I would’ve never felt saved by anyone.
- You don’t think they’d get over it?
- Never in a million years. They think it’s all a choice. I tried to choose otherwise for so long, and now I wonder why I ever wanted it any other way. What could possibly be worth pretending not to be myself for my whole life?
- I hear you, I’m glad I got out of the whole suffering-based culture thing early. I still think about it sometimes. They get you in your formative years because they know you’ll never forget them.
- They were still good people though. I hope they’re doing okay.
- Good people don’t shun their own kind.
- Maybe they do if they’re misguided enough.
- This is why I love you. You’re crazy but deep down you’re a saint.
- Pfft, sure, the patron saint of heretics, maybe.
